From Cameroon to Canada: A Journey of Resilience and Leadership
Meet Sandra Kemzang, a dedicated and ambitious first-year law student at the University of Ottawa, who is also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Originally from Yaoundé, Cameroon, she arrived in Canada in 2009, settling first in Etobicoke before moving to Brampton, where she completed part of her elementary education.
Sandra’s academic journey has been marked by strong leadership and community involvement. Before joining the University of Ottawa, she attended Sainte-Famille, a French high school in Mississauga, where she played an active role in student governance. She served as Vice President of Communications for the student body association and was also a Student Trustee for the MonAvenir Francophone School Board.
Professional & Community Engagement
Sandra is actively involved in both academic and professional spheres, balancing her law studies with two impactful roles:
✅ Head Mentor at the Regional Mentoring Center – University of Ottawa
🔹 Leads and supervises a team of mentors helping high school seniors transition to university life.
✅ Publications and Verifications Officer – Canadian House of Commons
🔹 Assists in documenting parliamentary committee proceedings to support official transcripts.
Beyond her professional commitments, Sandra is an active member of Regroupement étudiant de common law en français (RECLEF). As a 1L representative, she advocates for Francophone and Francophile students in common law, ensuring they receive equal access to resources and opportunities.
Overcoming Challenges & Finding Purpose
Sandra’s journey has not been without challenges. Adapting to a new environment after leaving Cameroon and dealing with the emotional toll of separation from family and culture have shaped her resilience. However, the sacrifices made by her parents have instilled in her strong values of determination and perseverance, which continue to drive her success.
Her aspiration as a future lawyer is to make a meaningful impact by ensuring that minority groups, such as Francophones and people of color, receive the legal representation they deserve. She is committed to fighting for equity and fairness, so that individuals from underrepresented communities can trust that their legal outcomes are based on their case’s merit, rather than their identity.
